Sun Peaks is the destination at the end of a 25-kilometre road off the Yellowhead Highway. It's surrounded by mountains and built around the things people come here to enjoy: skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, hiking and simply spending time in the great outdoors.
There isn't a regular public bus route to the resort, so visitors arriving by air generally choose between a private car service, an airport shuttle or a rental car. Each has its advantages, depending on the size of your group, where you're flying into and how you'd like to spend your holiday.
If you opt for a shuttle or private transfer, you can sit back, enjoy the scenery and let someone else take care of the driving. They'll drop you off at Sun Peaks and collect you when it's time to head home. No winter driving to worry about, no parking to find, and no need to navigate unfamiliar mountain roads! This is especially attractive to travelers planning to stay awhile.
And once you're here? That's where a little planning makes all the difference.
You might want to spend your days skiing or exploring the trails, wander into the village for a coffee, shopping, spa or dinner, and return to your accommodation to enjoy an evening together. Perhaps you'll do all of the above! With a little thought about where you're staying and how you'll get to the places you want to visit, you can enjoy your Sun Peaks vacation without needing a car.
Without a vehicle, choosing your location will be especially important. Let's look at narrowing down what Sun Peaks area will work for your getaway based on how you'll spend your time.
The complimentary in-resort shuttle operates during the winter season, serving designated stops around the resort and connecting accommodation areas with the village and ski lifts. It loop takes about 20 minutes, so that's about the longest wait you'll have. The latest schedule was 8am - 4:10pm during the day, and 5:40pm - 9:40pm in the evening. Check the stop locations when planning your stay.
While the shuttle is handy, you'll need to work around its schedule. If you're planning a late dinner, an early start outside its operating hours, or a summer visit, make sure you're comfortable walking to or from your accommodation when it's not running. Even if you're staying close to the village, the shuttle may be useful when you need to access other Sun Peaks areas.
Sun Peaks has a network of Valley Trails that connects the village with surrounding neighbourhoods, offering an alternative to walking on the roads. The trail winds through forested areas — it is lit at night and plowed in winter, making it a useful option for getting around on foot.
Check the Valley Trail map to see whether a trail provides a convenient route from your accommodation to the village or other places you plan to visit. Keep in mind that walking distances and conditions vary by location and season. If you're planning to rely on the Valley Trail, consider how far you'll need to walk, particularly when returning to your accommodation in the evening.
Sun Peaks has a lovely mix of accommodation, from hotels and condos in and around the village to townhomes and larger homes spread throughout the resort. The best location for your group depends on how you plan to spend your time here, whether that means skiing, exploring the village, enjoying the trails or simply spending time together at your accommodation.
If you're travelling with a group, there's another consideration: while the village is the heart of the action, it doesn't offer large chalets where everyone can stay together under one roof. If having everyone under one roof is important to you, you'll want to look beyond the village centre and weigh up the location against the space you need.
Ski-in/ski-out can mean that you can ski straight to your door and step outside onto a run, or it may mean a reasonable walk between your accommodation and the nearest ski run or lift. Both can qualify as ski-in/ski-out, provided you don't need transportation to get there.
The distance and route can vary considerably from one property to another, so if ski access is important to you, find out exactly what it involves and how far you'll need to walk.
Here’s a look at the different areas of Sun Peaks, arranged by their approximate distance from the village. This will help you compare locations and decide which best suits your plans.
If you want restaurants, cafés, shops, equipment rentals and the Sunburst and Sundance lifts close at hand, staying in the village is hard to beat. You can pop out for a coffee or wander out for dinner without having to plan around a shuttle.
Accommodation here is primarily hotels, condos and smaller units. If your group needs a larger home where everyone can stay together, you will need to look a little farther out.
Just 450–850 metres from the village, Sunburst Estates offers spacious homes within easy reach of village amenities. A connector trail leads directly to the Sunburst and Sundance lifts, so you only need to walk from your home to the trail before skiing the rest of the way. The Valley Trail and a shuttle stop at the entrance to Sunburst Drive provide additional options for getting around.
Many homes on the north side of the street offer ski-in access from Tod Mountain, while those on the south side may involve skiing the designated “Sunburst Estates” run and walking the final stretch home. If ski access matters to you, check the route for the specific home.
These neighbourhoods have properties ranging from 600 metres to 2.1 km from the village, so the walking distance depends on where you're staying.
Most properties are shuttle-out or involve a longer walk to the lifts. Some homes farther from the village may have closer access to the Burfield chairlift, but be aware that it's a particularly long, cold ride to the top of the mountain.
Some properties advertise ski-back access, but the route can vary. It may involve a tree-filled trail, a challenging run or a walk from where you finish skiing to the house. If ski access is important to you, check exactly what the route involves before booking.
The Douglas Court area is 750 metres to 1.3 km from the village. Some homes are closer to the Sundance lifts, while others are nearer to Orient, so ski access varies by property.
The shuttle stops on the main road at Valley Drive, and you'll need to walk from there to your accommodation. If you're travelling without a vehicle, check the walking distance and route before booking to make sure it meets your expectations.
Lookout Ridge is 1.7–2.1 km from the village. Some properties have ski access through the eastern lift network, but the route varies by location, so check the details if ski-in or ski-out access is important to you.
The winter shuttle stops along the main roads, which may leave you with up to an additional 400 metres to walk to your accommodation. Check the distances and routes from the specific property based on how you plan to spend your time—whether you'll be heading to the lifts or walking into the village, particularly if you'll be returning later in the evening—to make sure the location suits your group.
The Burfield area is 1.9–2.4 km from Sun Peaks village. The Burfield chairlift is the closest lift to these properties. Reaching it requires a walk of at least 400 metres, and the chairlift ride to the top takes 22 minutes, so factor that into your plans for the ski day. Ski-in access to this area is from Morrisey.
Burfield also has its own facilities on the north side of Sun Peaks Road, including a diner, pharmacy and deli, which can be convenient alternatives to travelling into the village.
The winter shuttle has stops along Burfield Drive. Check the property's exact location, ski access and walking route to the village to make sure it suits your group's plans, especially if you plan to rely on the shuttle.
You don't need a car to enjoy a mountain holiday at Sun Peaks, but it helps to think about what you'd like to do during your stay in relation to where you'll be staying. With the right location, you can enjoy the mountain setting, explore the village and take part in a variety of activities without having to drive from place to place.
In winter, there's downhill and Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, tobogganing, snowmobiling and horse-drawn sleigh rides. In summer, you can explore hiking trails, ride the chairlift for alpine views, go mountain biking, play golf or enjoy a guided horseback ride. The village also has restaurants, cafés, shops and seasonal events to enjoy. Many activities are based in or around the resort, although access and availability vary by season.
Not everyone in your group needs to want the same kind of holiday. Some may be eager to spend their days on the mountain, while others might prefer a leisurely walk, a round of golf, browsing the village or simply enjoying the scenery and watching for wildlife on a deck with their favourite beverage. And sometimes, the main attraction is having a place where everyone can gather, share meals and enjoy one another's company, with the freedom to head out for an activity whenever the mood strikes.
If you're travelling without a car, consider how easily you can reach the activities that interest you, whether on foot, using the Valley Trail network or taking the resort shuttle. Some locations are more convenient than others, and certain activities may require additional arrangements. You can explore nearby Sun Peaks activities to help plan your stay.
If you're planning a stay in Sun Peaks without a vehicle, it's worth thinking about meals as part of your trip planning. You can, of course, eat out at the resort's restaurants throughout your stay. Alternatively, if you've booked accommodation with a kitchen, you can prepare some or all of your meals there, particularly if you're travelling with family or a larger group for more than a weekend.
For a large grocery order, you can arrange this ahead of time, either picking it up in Kamloops on your way to Sun Peaks or having it delivered to your accommodation.
Sun Peaks Cargo offers a white-glove service, which means they can not only pick up and deliver your groceries - they will put them away before you arrive. This can be especially handy if you're delayed unexpectedly while travelling, as your groceries will already be taken care of when you reach your accommodation. Check the Sun Peaks Cargo website for current services, delivery schedules and fees, and book ahead.
For items you need during your stay—or if budget isn't a major consideration—Bluebird Market in the village carries groceries and everyday essentials. Ohana Deli & Market offers deli foods, prepared meals and selected grocery items, and also provides delivery service.
You can also order restaurant meals and pizza for delivery, giving you another option for evenings when you'd rather not cook.
Planning ahead means you can decide how much you'd like to eat out, order in or prepare in your accommodation, without needing a car.
