Choosing Your Sun Peaks Ski Dates: What Will Your Stay Cost?

You’ve decided on a ski trip to Sun Peaks. Now comes the part that can take some juggling: finding dates that work for everyone in your group or match dates with your budget. For some, the Christmas holidays or a school break are the only realistic times for your group to plan a ski trip together. Others have more flexibility with their dates and may be surprised by how much accommodation prices change across the season.

If you’re organizing the trip, it helps to know which weeks tend to book early and where you might find better value. Your starting question is simple: Are booking your ideal dates the priority, or is sticking with a budget?

When the dates matter most

Sometimes the trip is about the dates. Perhaps your family dreams of spending Christmas together in a snowy mountain village, or your friends have their hearts set on celebrating New Year’s at Sun Peaks. If children are coming, school calendars may leave you with only a few possibilities.

At Pinetree Chalet, the holidays and the February long weekend are dates we get many inquiries on. That February long weekend entices both Canadian and American travellers to take an extended retreat. If one of these periods is the reason for your trip, I’d start looking early—particularly if you need a larger home. Finding enough beds is one thing; finding a layout that works for your particular group is another.

January and February can fill earlier than you think

A week outside the holidays might seem like it would be easier to book. That isn’t always how it plays out. We also welcome guests travelling from overseas for longer ski holidays during their break times in January and into February, and those trips are often planned well in advance.

Many homes have a longer minimum booking period during these months. For a host, that helps to manage turnovers and avoid vacancies between bookings, especially that fall between weekend bookings. 

Don’t overlook early March

March brings spring break visitors, but we often see accommodation rates below those in January and February. Many of the March inquiries we receive are from Canadian guests, while guests travelling from overseas more often plan their longer stays earlier in the winter. That’s what we’ve observed at our chalet; the price for any particular week will still depend on the accommodation you choose.

I’m especially fond of the week before spring break. It can offer longer ski days, milder temperatures and quieter slopes, often at a lower accommodation rate than you’d find in January or February. If your group can travel then, it’s a week I’d put on your list to compare.

The quieter ends of the season

If your dates are flexible and you’re watching the budget, take a look at the beginning and end of ski season. Sun Peaks usually opens by late November, sometimes earlier. An early trip can cost less, though you’ll want to check the
