What happens if I see a bear?
It is not unusual to see bears and other animals. Do not attempt to pet or feed them. Never leave food or garbage outdoors. Keep your distance, when possible, and let them know of your presence by talking loudly in a calm voice, banging pots or whatever loud noises you can make. Do not turn your back to the bear but do not make direct eye contact, and make yourself look as large as possible - put young children on your shoulders, and wave your arms. Carefully walk backwards away from the bear, talking loudly but calmly, so you do not appear threatening. Do not challenge the bear, nor back off if it charges you - it is a sign of weakness - stand your ground.
