Sun Peaks has become one of British Columbia’s standout mountain biking destinations. While Whistler often comes to mind when planning a BC mountain biking trip — much like skiing — Sun Peaks has developed a strong reputation of its own — built on varied terrain, a welcoming village atmosphere, and a busy summer calendar of mountain biking events.
Over the years at Pinetree Chalet, we’ve hosted many summer guests visiting Sun Peaks specifically for mountain biking—from racing teams to groups of friends on riding trips to families looking for varied terrain.
As well as being an overall great biking park for getaways, Sun Peaks hosts downhill races, enduro competitions, and recreational riding events throughout the summer, bringing a race-focused atmosphere to the resort.
During major events, the village takes on an exciting, energetic atmosphere, while racers prepare for competition and spectators gather along the course and around the base area as riders come through. These events highlight both the scale of the trail network and Sun Peaks' ability to host high-level mountain biking competitions.
Accommodation fills more quickly during major event weekends, so larger groups should plan and book well in advance, especially if they require self-contained accommodation with full facilities.
Sun Peaks appeals to a wide range of mountain bikers because of its accessible, well-structured trail network. Riders can naturally progress from beginner-friendly terrain through to more advanced features as their confidence grows.
The trail network offers everything from beginner-friendly trails with smooth, wide turns and minimal technical features, through to intermediate trails with berms, rollers, and small jumps, and on to advanced descents with steeper terrain, rock gardens, and more technical features. This makes it possible for mixed-ability groups to ride at the same destination without needing to separate completely.
Another reason mountain bikers choose Sun Peaks is the ease of the overall experience. The village is easy to access, the bike park is easy to navigate, and everything is close enough to seamlessly move between lifts, food, and accommodation.
Mountain biking trips to Sun Peaks are often shared experiences, bringing together friends, families, and mountain biking teams looking to enjoy the trails.
The vast and varied trail network allows riders to choose trails that suit their ability and preferences, while the overall resort layout is simple to navigate, making it easy for groups to enjoy the mountain at their own pace.
Groups can spend full days on the mountain, with riders naturally splitting up based on ability or trail preference. They can then come back together in the village for shopping and dining, or return to their home base to share a meal, enjoy games, and unwind in the hot tub while taking in the mountain views.
Pinetree Chalet provides a comfortable home base for mountain biking groups visiting Sun Peaks.
The flexible layout that can accommodate various types of groups is one of the stand-out features at Pinetree Chalet.
A key advantage for larger groups is the ability to have up to 7 separate sleeping areas, 6 bathrooms, and up to 15 separate beds. This works well for families, riding groups who prefer not to share beds, and mountain biking teams of mixed ages.
Inside the chalet, up to 16 guests can spread out while still having generous shared spaces to gather and relax after a day on the trails. This balance between privacy and living spaces that are large enough to accommodate everyone works well for various group dynamics, especially for multi-day mountain biking trips.
Medium-sized groups of up to 12 people can choose our 4 bedroom configuration or add the Lodgepole Hideaway to create a 5th private space with a 5th bathroom, while still enjoying the same home-style comforts.
For smaller groups needing a fully contained getaway, our 2-bedroom Sugar Pine Suite may be available to book separately.
While the trails are the focus, the experience off the bike sets the tone for a memorable adventure - especially over multi-day stays.
Guests can store bikes and gear, prepare healthy meals for refuelling, and enjoy comfortable gathering spaces to unwind after riding.
Evenings are a time to relax and review the day’s rides, plan routes for the next day, and enjoy the slower pace of the mountain experience after a day of adventure.
The perfect way to end the day is the open-air hot tub at Pinetree Chalet, set right in the midst of nature with flower meadows, trails, and awe-inspiring views surrounding you.
For those planning a longer BC mountain biking adventure, Whistler offers a different style of riding experience, with its own unique terrain, village atmosphere, and extensive mountain biking opportunities.
